The House of Amara

Built as a home.
Kept as one.

Nine generations ago, Thakur Amar Singh commissioned a summer haveli on the western bank of Lake Pichola — sandstone quarried at Kankroli, mirrorwork by artisans from Jaisalmer, doors of Burma teak that still close with a whisper.

In 1998 the family opened seventeen rooms to guests rather than sell a single stone of it. Restoration since has been slow and deliberate: lime plaster instead of cement, original araish polish revived by the grandsons of the men who first laid it, and a rainwater system beneath the courtyards that has fed the gardens since before it was fashionable to say so.

What has not changed is the welcome. Every arrival is met at the ghat steps with lake water, marigold and a name already known.

Heritage

A Grade-II listed haveli restored with lime, teak and patience.

Hospitality

Three staff to every guest, and a butler who remembers your tea.

Sustainability

Zero-waste kitchens, solar thermal, 100% harvested rainwater.

“We came for three nights of our honeymoon and left having been quietly adopted. On the last evening they had moved our table to the ghat steps without being asked — because that is where we had sat every night.”
Ananya & RohitCouple · Mumbai Honeymoon
“Two children under seven, and not one moment of apology required. The kids' courtyard, the puppet show at six, and a nanny who taught my daughter to fold a lotus. We have already rebooked for Diwali.”
The Kapoor FamilyFamily · Bengaluru Family
“I took four calls from the boardroom terrace with the lake behind me and every one of them asked where I was. Fibre never dropped, the coffee never stopped, and the 4am airport car was waiting at 3.45.”

“I have stayed in the great palace hotels of Rajasthan. This one is smaller and, I think, the only one that still feels lived in. The Ayurvedic physician changed how I sleep — six weeks on, it has held.”

“Three hundred guests, two days, one monsoon downpour at exactly the wrong hour — and the team had the entire dinner moved indoors and lit with lamps before anyone noticed the rain had started.”

Questions, answered

Check-in from 2 pm and check-out by 12 noon. Early check-in and late check-out are offered free of charge whenever the house allows — simply tell us your flight and we will hold the room. Guaranteed 4 pm checkout is included for Amara Circle members and all suite bookings.

Yes, both ways, for every booked room and every night of the year. A chauffeur meets you inside the terminal at Maharana Pratap Airport with cold towels and lime water; the drive takes roughly 38 minutes. Guests arriving by train at Udaipur City are met on the platform.

Jain, vegan, gluten-free, sattvic, kosher-style and allergen-specific menus are all prepared as a matter of course — our kitchens run separate preparation lines. Tell us at the time of booking and the chef will telephone before you travel if the requirements are complex.

Very. Two children under twelve stay free in their parents' room, cots and bed rails are complimentary, and the Kids' Courtyard runs from 9 am to 7 pm with trained staff. Certified nannies can be arranged with 24 hours' notice. The Sky Lounge is adults-only after 9 pm.

Dogs under 15 kg are welcome in eight designated garden rooms at ₹3,000 per stay, which covers a bed, bowls and a walking service. Pets are not permitted in the restaurants, spa or pool areas, though the mango grove is very much theirs.

Flexible rates may be cancelled without charge until 48 hours before arrival. Advance-purchase and festival-period rates are non-refundable but may be moved once, within twelve months, subject to availability. Wedding and buyout contracts carry their own terms.

October to March is the classic season — clear days, cool evenings, the lake full after the rains. July to September is our own favourite: the Aravallis turn green, rates fall by up to 30%, and the courtyards smell of wet stone. April to June is hot and quiet, and the pool is at its best.

Partially. Six ground-floor rooms, all restaurants, the spa reception and the main courtyards are step-free with ramp access, and we have two accessible bathrooms. The old durbar wing and the ghat steps are, by their nature, not adaptable. Our team will walk you through the route in advance.
